Douglas Wright graduated from the University of Maryland Pharmacy School in 1981. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Maryland in 1985. While in school he completed externship training at John Hopkins Hospital, the University of Maryland Hospital, and the National Institutes of Health, Baltimore Cancer Research Center. After graduation, Dr. Wright joined the US Navy. There, he received advanced training in a wide variety of dental subjects, including oral diagnosis, periodontics (gum disease), endodontics (root canals), oral surgery, surgical anesthesia, advanced cardiac life support, and advanced traumatic life support. He was assigned to a US Navy warship and served in combat the Persian Gulf in 1988. Dr. Wright's military decorations include two Navy Commendation Medals, two Navy Achievement medals, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. After four years of active duty, transferred to the Naval reserves. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserves for an additional 17 years. During that time, he often provided care at Bethesda Naval Hospital. After working in a private practice for 10 years, Dr. Wright accepted a position at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Washington DC. In addition to treating dental patients, he served on the hospital's Infection Control Committee and was a member of the Medical Center's Chemical and Biological Decontamination team. Today, Dr. Wright has been working in dentistry for over 35 years! He is a member of the American Dental Association. He has published articles in the Journal of Academy of General Dentistry, Navy Medicine Magazine, Implant Practice US, Proceedings of the Naval Institute and Dental Economics magazine. Dr. Wright and his wife Karen live in Harrisonburg, Virginia. They have three children named Nicholas, Julia, and Rosemary. Dr. Wright enjoys playing in a soft rock band, where he handles rhythm guitar and vocals. He also enjoys shooting sporting clays and writing opinion essays for the Daily News Record in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
